Please check your eligibility to join this short course and time-tabling details with the Faculty for Social Wellbeing. The short course will only be delivered subject to a minimum number of applications being received.

The study-unit intends to offer participants training in key skills such as helping skills, reflexivity, self-awareness, working in transdisciplinary teams that are relevant in diverse interpersonal settings. It will also focus on counselling theory and recent research in the counselling field. The sessions offer the opportunity to practice skills and be given feedback from lecturers and other peers in the course. Emphasis will be made on experiential input and diverse methods of instruction will be utilized in order to ensure a truly immersive experience for the students.

Study-unit Aims

The aim of this study-unit is to introduce the counselling profession and guide participants to learn the key skills that they can then apply in their teams at work and in personal relationships. This study-unit offers the space to experientially develop self-awareness and reflexivity which are essential skills in counselling.


Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Describe what counselling is;
  • Discuss qualities of effective counsellors;
  • Demonstrate self-awareness and reflexivity;
  • Explain the significance of supervision and ethics in counselling;
  • Discuss the significance of the helping relationship;
  • Discuss how key counselling skills impact interpersonal relationships;
  • Demonstrate the ability to use reflexivity;
  • Discuss the importance of self-care.

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Practice key helping skills;
  • Apply reflexivity in written and oral exercises;
  • Explore areas of personal growth;
  • Practice the processing of dynamics in interpersonal scenarios;
  • Practice the processing of dynamics in helping relationships.
